Did you know that a disposable lunch creates between 4–8 ounces of garbage everyday? That adds up to as much as 100 pounds per year! (The weight of a child…..) Two million plastic beverage bottles are used in the U.S. every 5 minutes. It's time to have less waste in our lunches, and it's easy.
Packing a Waste-Free Lunch for school and work helps us to:
- eat healthily. Packaged food usually has more salt, sugar, oil and white flour than recommended by the Canada Food Guide.
- prevent food wastage
- lower food expenses
- send less waste to landfill (cost of waste disposal, and plastic never rots)
- reduce pollution (packaging requires factories)
- reduce recycling (recycling requires factories)
- reduce energy and resource wasting (trees for paper, oil for plastic, coal for electricity)
- keep our custodians happy
- teach our kids that they have influence
